5/6 Class News Weeks 8 & 9

Over the last two weeks, Grade 5/6 students have been working hard to complete their Lions Club speeches, edit and revise, and then make cue cards. Students practised their speeches and made sure to focus on using volume, tone and timing their speeches to ensure they are as close to four minutes as possible. All students did an amazing job presenting their speeches, and the level of research and detail that went into their speeches was praised by the Lions Club Judges. Congratulations to Hadley, who was our overall winner with her speech about Nancy Wake. Everyone should be very proud of their efforts.

In maths over the last couple of weeks, we have been converting between 12 and 24 hour time and calculating elapsed time in our measurement lessons. We have talked about why 24 hour time is used in the military and how it helps them to distinguish AM and PM for countries in different time zones. We have also been learning about, sorting and ordering angles, and looking at how angles are found in our everyday environments.

Over the school holidays, we encourage families and students to discuss maths in every day life – such as measuring ingredients in recipes, telling the time in 24 hour format, calculating elapsed time, using timetables, estimating and comparing angles… maths is everywhere!

We are looking forward to a well-earned holiday break and to recharge ready for an action packed Term 3.
