1/2 Class Term3, weeks 4 & 5
Students in Year 1/2 have been exploring a range of skills across English and Mathematics.
In Literacy, students have begun a novel study of Fantastic Mr Fox. They have explored how Mr Fox’s actions reveal his character traits and practiced justifying their opinions by giving reasons for their points of view. Students have also learned about anthropomorphism and how authors and illustrators make deliberate choices when describing and representing characters.
In Mathematics, students have been learning about 2D shapes. They have explored how 2D shapes are flat and have sides and corners (vertices), while practicing naming, comparing, and classifying shapes based on their properties. We have been impressed by the students’ enthusiasm and growing confidence when explaining their mathematical thinking.
As part of our Schoolwide Positive Behaviour program, students have been learning about our Behaviour Matrix and how it connects to our ARCH values. This fortnight, our focus has been “We use the facilities appropriately.” Students worked together to create anchor charts showing what this expectation looks and sounds like, including using the toilets calmly and respectfully, giving others privacy, keeping facilities clean, using quiet voices and returning to class promptly. Students have done a fantastic job contributing their ideas and developing a shared understanding of how following expectations helps create a positive and productive environment for everyone.
Students have also been developing their athletics skills, learning about a range of track and field events with the support of a local athletics coach. They had the opportunity to put their new skills on show during a fun day at the Stratford Primary School Athletics Carnival. It was fantastic to see students getting involved, having a go and supporting one another throughout the activities.
