1/2 Class News Term 3 - Weeks 2 & 3

Students in Year 1/2 have been exploring a range of skills across English and Mathematics.

In Literacy, students have continued their Bob Graham author study by making personal connections to the characters' experiences and emotions, sequencing the key events in stories, and writing simple summaries that include the main ideas and important details. Next, we will begin a novel study of Fantastic Mr Fox.

In Mathematics, students have been learning to add and subtract two-digit numbers by partitioning (breaking apart) numbers into tens and ones before applying efficient mental strategies such as bridging to 10 and adjusting. They have also been introduced to the compensation strategy, which is particularly useful when adding numbers ending in 8 or 9. Students have learnt to round these numbers to the next multiple of 10 by adding 1 or 2, complete the calculation, and then compensate by subtracting the extra amount added, much like balancing a seesaw.

As part of our Schoolwide Positive Behaviour program, students have also been learning about the school's Behaviour Matrix and how it connects to our ARCH values. This fortnight’s focus has been on the expectation "We follow expectations." Together, students created anchor charts including following instructions straight away, starting learning promptly, trying their best, asking for help when needed, and checking they have listened carefully before acting on each instruction. They have developed a shared understanding of how following expectations helps create a positive and productive learning environment for everyone.
