SPS Waste Audit
Last Friday during Curious Communities, our whole school participated in a waste audit with the help of Sharon Ray, who is Wellington Shire’s Sustainability Education Officer.
The audit was led by our School Leaders, who helped us to empty each classroom’s bins and see what was inside. We spread all of it out on the grass and individually sorted each item into the correct bin.
We were then able to see how good SPS is at identifying the correct bins for our waste!
Here is the breakdown:
F/1 Classroom:
Red bin – 8L of landfill waste, 2.5L of organic material, 4L of recyclable material and 0.5L of ‘other’. Total of 7L in the wrong bin and 8L in the right bin.
Yellow recycling bin – 2.5L of landfill waste, 1L of organic material, 4L of recyclable material. Total of 4L in the right bin and 3.5L in the wrong bin.
1/2 Classroom
Red bin – 2.5 L of landfill waste, 1.25L of organic material, 5L of recyclable material and 0.5L of ‘other’.
Yellow recycling bin – mostly paper, a couple of apple cores and some plastic wrappers.
3/4 Classroom:
Red bin- 11L of landfill waste, less than 1L of organic material, 5L of recyclable material, less than 1L of ‘other’.
Yellow recycling bin - mostly paper, some landfill items like tissues and plastic wrappers.
5/6 Classroom:
Red bin – 5L of landfill waste, 2.5L of organic material, 8L of recyclable material.
Yellow recycling bin - mostly paper, some landfill items like tissues and plastic wrappers. Approximately 1L of organic material like banana peels and other food items.
We will continue to learn about waste and build our skills around identifying and sorting types of material and the appropriate way to dispose of it. Well done to all involved – we had a ‘rubbish’ day at school!
