Kitchen Garden Week 3 & 4

What a busy two weeks we have had in the kitchen garden! Decorating Mothers’ Day biscuits, preparing dessert for our Shakespeare banquet and harvesting our first beans.

In week 2 all classes learnt to make rolled biscuits and how to decorate them using icing and sprinkles. The 3/4 were lucky enough to have Nicole Regan come in to show them some simple ways to decorate their biscuits. In week 3 all classes made biscuits which they decorated using icing that was their mother’s favourite colour. These were packaged in containers the students had made. Week 4 was the Shakespeare banquet and the F/1 and 1/2 students made mini honey cakes and the 3/4s Shrewsbury biscuits, a recipe that dated from the time of Shakespeare. These were served as afternoon tea after the whole school had watched the performance of “A Midsummer’s Night Dream”.

In the garden we harvested the first beans and they were blanched and frozen. We will continue this process as the crops mature. The Grade 5 students prepared some new garden beds and we are ready to plant winter crops next week.
