Humanities Weeks 8 & 9
Humanities students across different year levels have been developing their understanding of geography and history.
F/1 (with Mrs Martin): Students have enjoyed making connections between their prior knowledge of families and their learning about First Nations Peoples and Aboriginal families. Through a variety of picture story books, class discussions, and learning activities, students have developed new vocabulary and explored the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, including the many language groups and Nations across Australia. Students have also learnt about our local Gunai Kurnai Country and the importance of family, community, Country, and belonging.
Years 1/2: Students began their unit by exploring the four seasons and the characteristics of each. They discussed typical weather patterns and environmental changes that occur throughout the year, using vocabulary such as rainy, hot, cold, cloudy and windy to describe different weather conditions. They considered how seasonal changes can influence daily life, including the clothing people wear and the activities they participate in.
Years 3/4: Students continued their journey around Australia, using maps to explore the country's states, territories, and First Nations Countries and Places. Their second destination was Victoria, where they examined both natural and human features, including Melbourne, rivers, coastlines and cultural landmarks. Students explored why people are connected to these places, including the deep connections of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation to the land and waterways around Melbourne.
Years 5/6: Students began their new unit by exploring the concepts of values, goals and responsibilities. They discussed examples of each and investigated how shared values, goals and responsibilities help communities function effectively.
