Humanities Term 3, Weeks 6 & 7

Students across different year levels have been developing their understanding of Geography and History, exploring Australia’s diverse environments, cultures and systems of government.

F/1 (with Mrs Martin): Foundation and Grade One students have been exploring community and places of belonging. We discussed familiar places in our Stratford community, such as the library, and explored the difference between real and imagined places.

Students were introduced to basic mapping and the concept of a bird’s-eye view, using Google Maps to explore our local community. They enjoyed creating their own maps and sharing them with the class.

Years 1/2: Students have been exploring weather and seasons. Students have also investigated factors that affect weather and asked questions about why different places around the world experience different weather. They have explored how places closer to the equator are generally warmer than places closer to the poles, and how the tilt of Earth’s axis causes the seasons.

Years 3/4:
Students continued their journey around Australia by exploring Western Australia. They have located Western Australia and places they have visited on maps and explored the importance of Perth and the Swan River to the Whadjuk Noongar People. Students also investigated significant Western Australian places, including Ningaloo Reef and the Pinnacles, and considered why these places are important to people.

Years 5/6:
Students have continued learning about the three levels of government in Australia, with a particular focus on the role of local government.  Students investigated the responsibilities of local governments, including maintaining roads, managing waste and recycling, registering pets, planning and zoning, and providing parks, sporting facilities, swimming pools and libraries. They considered how these services and responsibilities support communities and contribute to making local areas clean, safe, fair and enjoyable places to live.
