Humanities Term 3, Weeks 4 & 5

Students across different year levels have been developing their understanding of Geography and History, exploring Australia’s diverse environments, cultures and systems of government.

F/1 (with Mrs Martin): Our Foundation and Grade One students have continued exploring places of belonging, broadening their learning to consider the significance of belonging for First Nations Australians and places of belonging within our community.

Students have enjoyed sharing their ideas and experiences through engaging activities and discussions, thinking about what makes a place special, how people connect to places, and why a sense of belonging is important.

Years 1/2:
Students compared the six seasons of the Yawuru traditional calendar for Broome, Western Australia, with the four Western seasons of summer, autumn, winter and spring. They explored how seasonal changes can be understood and described in different ways and developed an appreciation for the knowledge and perspectives of First Nations Peoples.

Years 3/4:
Students continued their journey around Australia by exploring Queensland. They learned about the importance of protecting significant environments, including the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest, and explored important landmarks across the state. Students also recognised the Turrbal and Jagera Peoples as the First Nations custodians of the Country around Brisbane.

Years 5/6:

Students have been learning about the three levels of government in Australia: local, state and federal. They explored the roles and responsibilities of each level and considered how governments make decisions and provide services that support communities. Students also explored how the three levels of government work together to meet the needs of Australians and revisited the concept of democracy and what it means to participate in a democratic society.
