Grade 5/6 News
Grade 5/6 students have recently begun their Lions Club persuasive speech writing. Every year, the Lions club invites us to participate in the Junior Public Speaking Competition, which is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their public speaking skills and self-confidence. Our topic for this year is ‘if you could have dinner with anyone in the world, past or present, who would it be and why, and what would you serve them for dinner?
We have planned and started drafting a persuasive speech, which includes an introduction, at least 3 arguments to support our thinking, and a conclusion. We are making sure to include persuasive devices in our writing, including emotive and figurative language, the ‘rule of three’, and rhetorical questions.
Here are some of our ideas:
“Ladies and gentlemen, today I’m going to tell you why I have chosen to invite William Shakespeare to dinner. Firstly, he wrote 37 plays all by himself, he wrote a play about his son Hamnet and he started writing plays at 25 years old.” – Sophia
“Imagine leading a French army to victory at 16 and being burnt at the stake three years later. Well, Joan of Arc did and today I am going to tell you all about this incredible young girl and why I would like to invite her to dinner.” – Hadley
“During an episode, if an engine rail switch got damaged, did you have to replace the part if it was lethal, or would you carefully continue if it was minor?” (Question I would ask Wilbert Vere Awdry, the inventor of the Thomas and Friends series, if I was able to have dinner with him) – Brayden
“Cheese! Oops… wrong speech. Okay, ladies and gentlemen, if I could have dinner with anyone in the world, I would choose Pedro Pascal. Fun fact: his real name is José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal.” – Jensen
Pen Licences
We have had some students earn a pen licence recently. They have shown that they can aim high, show respect towards their learning and property, and be honourable by upholding the ‘conditions’ of their licence – which means being neat and tidy. We have added these successful work samples to our WAGOLL wall (what a good one looks like).
