Zones of Regulation

Wellbeing learning this term has focused on learning the Zones of Regulation and strategies that help us to stay in the optimal zone for learning - green. Our wonderful Grade 3-4 students have been learning about many ways that they can regulate their big emotions. Through the Zones of Regulation, students have investigated ways to support themselves and others when they are feeling dysregulated.

Blue Zone feelings include sadness, being tired, bored or feeling sick.

Yellow Zone is about being frustrated, feeling silly, nervous, overwhelmed or excited.

Red Zone is where we are now out of control. These emotions include feeling elated or angry and it is at this point that we may hurt someone.

Green Zone is where we ideally would like to sit for most of the time. It is here that we are able to set goals, support others, feel happy and content. When in the Green Zone, we are at our optimal level to learn.

Our students have developed a list of strategies that they like to use when they are feeling big emotions, including:

·         Read a book

·         Talk to a friend

·         Distract myself

·         Go for a run

·         Do mindfulness

·         Listen to music

·         Use a fidget toy

·         Focus on my breathing

Year 3 & 4 presented at assembly some of the strategies they use.
