Kitchen Garden week 7 and 8.
The last two weeks in the kitchen garden have seen planting continuing with the 3/4 class starting to plant out their seedlings that have been growing in the greenhouse. There were some casualties and the students are learning the importance of consistent watering. The 5/6 garden has had some challenges with insects (photo below) and have learnt about the life cycle of the white cabbage butterfly and are investigating the best way to keep their plants pest free. They are designing physical barriers and we are observing to see which is most effective.
In the kitchen we have been making muffins using donated and available fruit and vegetables. The students have learnt how to use an oven safely and how to grate food.
We made carrot muffins in week 7 and week 8 cooked both apple and zucchini muffins(sweet) and cheesy zucchini muffins (savoury). This gave the students opportunity to compare the two muffins. (2 photos below)
For the last two weeks of the term we will be focussed on baking and preparing our garden beds for the holidays.
