Kitchen Garden
What a busy two weeks in the Kitchen Garden! Week 2 saw all classes conducting experiments. The F/1 class are observing the germination of bean seeds in clear plastic bags taped to the classroom window. The 1/2 class worked in teams to plant jiffy soil pots with bean seeds and then created different environments to investigate what plants need to grow successfully. We will continue to observe these for the next few weeks. The 3/4s dissected bean seeds and learned the scientific names for parts of a bean seed. This is the start of their study on the life cycle of plants. Finally, the 5/6 class tested the pH of our garden beds. We will use their results to decide if we need to add anything to our soil to allow our vegetables to flourish.
Week 3 was food preparation for the Shakespeare banquet. The 3/4 and 5/6 classes made over 300 mini sausage rolls and the 1/2 s made honey cakes for dessert. Both of these were enjoyed by the students, and it gave them the experience of cooking for a large crowd.
