Generalising rules in Grade 5/6
In maths this week, we have been exploring how to create and extend geometric patterns. Through these patterns, we are beginning to understand basic algebra through generalising rules.
For example, if my pattern starts with 3 squares, and each time after that another two squares are added on, the rule would be: s = 3 + 2n (where s is the number of squares, and n is the stage number).
To find stage 10 of this pattern, you would need to solve it like this:
S = 3 + 2 x 10
Here are some examples of our patterns and rules. If you can solve the above problem, let one of the grade 5/6s know!
