Grade 1/2 Literacy

Over the past few weeks, the Grade 1/2 students have been making great progress in their reading, writing, and spelling skills by learning about segmenting and blending, graphs and digraphs, word webs, consonants and vowels, and suffixes such as -s, -es, and -ing. As part of their grammar learning, students have been exploring what makes a sentence, identifying nouns (who/what) and verbs (what doing), and distinguishing between fragments and complete sentences.

In writing, students are developing their planning skills by organising their thoughts before starting their stories. They are also building their confidence by using strategies to help them when they get stuck with writing.

They are also strengthening their understanding of time, including concepts such as o’clock, half-past, quarter past, and quarter to.

Alongside their academic learning, we have been focusing on the school values and what they mean to our students. Here’s how some of them describe the ARCH values:

Zaidee:

  • Aim High means try your best.

  • Respect means help people.

  • Being curious means ask questions.

  • Being honest means tell the truth.

Fareeda:

  • Aim High means try to do your best.

  • Respect means always be kind.

  • Being curious means always ask questions.

  • Being honest means don’t lie.

Macy:

  • Aim High means giving yourself challenges and keep trying.

  • Respect means listen to your teachers and your friends.

  • Being curious means asking questions and diving deeper into your learning.

  • Being honest means telling the truth even if you did something really, really bad.

Georgie:

  • Aim High means try your best.

  • Respect means take care of school property.

  • Being curious means asking questions.

  • Being honest means telling the truth even if it gets you in trouble.

It’s wonderful to see students reflecting on these values and applying them in their learning and daily interactions.
