F/1 News Term 4, Week 1
Term 4 has started with lots of success in the classroom and during our swimming lessons at Kemp! Our F/1 students have shown that they can step outside their comfort zones when learning something new and have demonstrated lots of resilience while swimming, getting changed and learning about water safety. We are very proud of the way they have approached these new experiences!
In Phonics, students have continued learning about two-letter and three-letter digraphs. We have also revisited our partner reading expectations and continued to build an understanding of the importance of reading every day, both at home and at school. Regular reading helps students build their confidence, fluency and enjoyment of books.
Our text study has focused on the book What Do You Call Your Grandma? We have travelled around the world through this story, discovering the different names people use for their grandparents. It has been a wonderful opportunity to explore how families and cultures can be both similar and different.
In Maths, students have been putting their addition knowledge into practice using subitising (recognising small groups of objects without counting each one) and counting on to solve number problems. We also played a game called Sneaky Numbers, where students challenged their partners to create the largest possible number in the hundreds. This was a fun way to practise number recognition, place value and comparing numbers.
Swimming continues to be a big part of our timetable, with lessons at Kemp on Tuesdays and Thursdays. While waiting for our lessons, students have been learning about how to stay safe in and around water.
Our school values continue to be at the centre of our learning. This week, we revisited Aim High – We Are Ready to Learn. Students discussed and practised the routines that help them prepare for learning before school, when arriving in the classroom and after breaks. We focused on the small but important steps we can take to ensure we are organised, settled and ready to make the most of our learning time.
